4 days in Dubai: an itinerary that actually works

Planned by people who run these trips every day: timings that avoid the heat and the traffic, and the order that makes sense.

By the TRAVENSA Travels team in Dubai · Last updated

Short answerSpend day 1 on Old Dubai and Downtown (creek, souks, Burj Khalifa area), day 2 in the desert (morning or evening safari), day 3 on an Abu Dhabi day trip for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and day 4 on the modern city and the water: the Dubai Frame, the Museum of the Future and a sunset cruise in Dubai Marina. With 3 days, drop Abu Dhabi. With 5, add Hatta in the mountains or a free beach day.

Day 1: Old Dubai, the souks and Downtown

Morning: the Old Dubai Creek & Souks Walking Tour (3.5 hours, from AED 73). It covers the Al Fahidi wind-tower houses, an abra across the creek and the spice and gold souks. If you would rather be driven, the Dubai City Highlights Tour (5 hours, from AED 153) adds the Burj Al Arab viewpoint and Downtown. Note that it does not run on Friday mornings.

Evening: Downtown for the Dubai Fountain shows beside the Dubai Mall, or the Dhow Dinner Cruise on the Water Canal (from AED 165) for dinner with the skyline.

Day 2: The desert

Sleep in, then take the Red Dune Desert Safari with BBQ Dinner. You are picked up at 15:00 and dropped off around 21:30, with dunes, sunset, camels and dinner on the way. In summer, or if you prefer mornings, the morning quad safari has you back by lunchtime. See desert safari prices compared.

Day 3: Abu Dhabi day trip

The Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque & City Day Trip (10 hours, from AED 250) covers the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque with a guide, Qasr Al Watan, the Corniche and an Emirates Palace photo stop, with entry to the mosque and the palace included. It does not run on Fridays, so plan this day for Saturday to Thursday. Wear modest clothing: see is Abu Dhabi worth a day trip?

Day 4: Modern Dubai and the water

Morning: the Dubai Frame & Museum of the Future combo (from AED 295), with timed tickets for both and the transfer between them. Sunset: the Dubai Marina Luxury Yacht Cruise (2 hours, from AED 240), past Bluewaters and the Palm as the towers light up.

Day-by-day cost (per person, before VAT)

1Old Dubai walk + dhow dinner cruiseAED 238
2Red dune safari with BBQ dinnerAED 281
3Abu Dhabi day trip (entries included)AED 250
4Frame & Museum of the Future + Marina cruiseAED 535

That totals about AED 1,304 per person for four full days of guided experiences, before 5% VAT. Add your airport transfer: the private sedan is AED 120 for the whole car.

Only 3 days?

Keep days 1, 2 and 4, and skip Abu Dhabi. That is the right call for a stopover.

5 days or more?

Add the Hatta Mountain & Kayak Day (October to April, from AED 320) for the Hajar mountains and kayaking on Hatta Dam, or keep a free day for the beach at JBR or Kite Beach. Adrenaline fans can book the tandem skydive over the Palm.

Quick answers

Is 4 days enough for Dubai?

Yes, for a first visit. Four days covers Old Dubai, Downtown, a desert safari, an Abu Dhabi day trip and the Marina without rushing.

What should I skip if I only have 3 days?

Skip the Abu Dhabi day trip. It takes about 10 hours and is the easiest day to drop.

Which day should I do the desert safari?

Any day except the day you arrive. Evening safaris finish around 21:30, so avoid a very early flight or tour the next morning.

Do tours run on Fridays?

Most do. The Dubai City Highlights Tour does not run on Friday mornings, and the shared Abu Dhabi day trip does not run on Fridays.
